Anthracite Coffee (앤트러사이트) is one of the names that helped build Seoul’s specialty coffee scene, and its Seogyo branch is the one people travel across the city to see: an old three-story house set behind a quiet rock and pine garden, a short walk from Mangwon Station. I went for the space. What I remember most, though, is a glass of matcha.

What Is Anthracite Coffee?
Anthracite Coffee opened in 2009 inside a disused shoe factory in Hapjeong-dong, next to the old Dangin-ri power plant. The name means anthracite, the hard black coal, and the founders chose it because the project was about bringing an abandoned building back to life. The factory became a roastery and cafe, and it is still the brand’s flagship today.
The company roasts its coffee every day and supplies cafes and restaurants as well as its own shops. Its blends and single origins are named after artists and writers, so you may see a bean called William Blake on the board. The brand later opened shops in Hannam, Seogyo, Yeonhui and Hallim on Jeju. However, a 2025 report says it now runs three shops: Hapjeong, Seogyo and Yeonhui. If you want the original factory, go to Hapjeong. If you want the garden house, go to Seogyo.
Anthracite Coffee branches in Seoul (2026)
| Branch | Address | Known for |
|---|---|---|
| Hapjeong (합정) | 10 Tojeong-ro 5-gil, Mapo-gu | The original shoe factory and roastery |
| Seogyo (서교) | 11 World Cup-ro 12-gil, Mapo-gu | Old house with a rock garden, near Mangwon Station |
| Yeonhui (연희) | 135 Yeonhui-ro, Seodaemun-gu | A darker, newer space in Yeonhui-dong |
The Seogyo Branch: An Old House With a Garden
Despite the Seogyo name, this branch sits on the Mangwon side of the neighborhood, much closer to Mangwon Station than to Hongdae or Hapjeong. The brand describes the building as an old mansion in Mangwon-dong. You climb a few concrete steps, cross a garden of rocks and pine trees, and enter a tall building with large windows and long balconies over the garden.
Inside, the cafe spreads over three floors. The brand says it keeps mechanical noise to a minimum, and there is no music, just the sound of the espresso machine and people talking quietly. Visitors often say the top floor is the calmest, so it suits reading or laptop work. In short, this is a place for slowing down, not for a loud catch-up with friends.
My Visit to Anthracite Coffee: The Matcha Stole the Show
I went to Anthracite Coffee Seogyo because the space looked beautiful. I came home, though, remembering only the matcha.
Here you get a thick, rich matcha that you just can’t find at franchise chains or ordinary cafes. It was sweet but not too sweet, and bitter but not too bitter. In other words, it was exactly right for a matcha lover.
That said, the price is also something you won’t see at an ordinary cafe. I paid ₩9,000 for the glass.

Anthracite Coffee Seogyo Menu and Prices
Anthracite is a roastery first, so most regulars order hand drip coffee from the bean list. Staff will help you choose if you tell them whether you like roasty or bright, acidic coffee. The prices below are listed on the Polle app and match what I paid for the matcha, but they can change.
| Drink | Price |
|---|---|
| Matcha milk (말차밀크) | ₩9,000 |
| Latte | ₩8,000 |
| Moka pot coffee | ₩7,000 |
| Cold brew / cold brew latte | ₩7,000 / ₩8,000 |
| Lemon tea / lemonade | ₩7,000 / ₩9,000 |
| Passion fruit ade | ₩9,000 |
The counter also sells baked goods such as madeleines and cakes, plus whole beans and drip bags to take home.
Tips for Visiting Anthracite Coffee Seogyo
- Take the subway. The street in front is narrow and the cafe has no parking. The brand points drivers to the Cheonggiwa 2 and 3 public lots, 3 to 5 minutes away on foot.
- Get off at Mangwon Station (Line 6), Exit 1. From Hapjeong Station it is a 10 to 12 minute walk.
- Expect a quiet room. Keep conversations low, especially upstairs.
- Go early on weekends if you want a seat by the windows over the garden.
- Coffee fan? Ask for a hand drip. Matcha fan? Order the matcha milk, as I did.

Verdict
I came to Anthracite Coffee for the house and the garden, and I left thinking about the matcha. It was thick, rich and balanced, the kind of matcha a real matcha lover goes looking for. The only catch is the price, which is well above an ordinary cafe. My rating: 4 out of 5.
